Learning objectives
Determine the logical relationship between two ideas (addition, contrast, cause and effect, illustration, sequence, conclusion) before reading the choices
Match the relationship to a transition of the right category, for example "however" for contrast, "for instance" for illustration, "consequently" for result and "subsequently" for time order
Read at least one sentence before and after the blank, since the relationship may span a paragraph rather than two adjacent sentences
Distinguish transitions within the same category by their precise meaning, such as "in fact" versus "for example" or "nevertheless" versus "instead"
Reject a transition that fits the grammar of the sentence but reverses or misstates the logical link
