Learning objectives

State the main purpose of a text as a whole in terms of what the author is doing (explaining, challenging, illustrating, reassessing) rather than what the text is about

Explain the function of a specified sentence or underlined portion within the text, such as introducing a claim, giving an example, conceding a point or qualifying a conclusion

Describe the overall structure of a text, for example moving from a general claim to specific evidence, posing a problem then a solution, or contrasting two views

Track the turns in an argument signaled by words such as "but", "yet", "however" and "although" to locate where the author's position shifts

Reject choices that describe the content accurately but misstate why the author included it
