Learning objectives

Read the student's stated goal first (for example to emphasize a similarity, introduce a person to an unfamiliar audience or compare two findings) and note its exact requirements

Test each option only against that goal: does the sentence accomplish precisely that rhetorical task using the information in the notes?

Recognize goals that specify an audience (familiar or unfamiliar with the topic) and pick the option that supplies the right amount of background

Reject sentences that are faithful to the notes but achieve a different purpose, such as giving a detail when a comparison was asked for

Apply the method to goals asking for a contrast, a sequence of events, a cause, or a generalization supported by a specific example
