Learning objectives

Set off nonessential (supplementary) elements with a matching pair of commas, dashes or parentheses, never mixing the two markers of a pair

Decide whether a phrase, appositive or relative clause is essential or nonessential to the meaning, and punctuate or leave unpunctuated accordingly

Punctuate items in a series with commas, and use semicolons to separate items that themselves contain commas

Recognize that no punctuation belongs between a subject and its verb, a verb and its object, or a preposition and its object

Select correct end punctuation, using a question mark for a direct question but a period for a question reported indirectly
