Learning objectives
Describe the forces between magnetic poles and between magnets and magnetic materials, including induced magnetism
Distinguish magnetic materials (iron, steel, cobalt, nickel) from non-magnetic materials, and temporary magnets made of soft iron from permanent magnets made of steel
Define a magnetic field as the region where a magnetic pole experiences a force, know that the field direction is the direction of the force on a north pole, and at Extended that closer field lines show a stronger field
Plot the magnetic field pattern around a bar magnet and between the poles of two magnets using a plotting compass or iron filings
Compare the uses of permanent magnets and electromagnets, and give examples of each
