Learning objectives

(HL) Calculate the torque of a force about an axis from τ = Fr sinθ and find the resultant torque acting on an extended body

(HL) Apply the two conditions for equilibrium of a rigid body, ΣF = 0 and Στ = 0, to problems involving beams, ladders, pivots and centres of mass

(HL) Use the moment of inertia of a point mass and of standard bodies given in the data booklet, and apply the rotational form of Newton's second law Στ = Iα

(HL) Apply the equations of rotational motion for constant angular acceleration, and interpret angular displacement–time and angular velocity–time graphs by taking gradients and areas

(HL) Calculate rotational kinetic energy from Ek = ½Iω² and angular momentum from L = Iω, and apply conservation of angular momentum when the resultant torque is zero

(HL) Apply angular impulse ΔL = τΔt = Δ(Iω), including finding the change in angular momentum from the area under a torque–time graph

(HL) Solve problems on rolling bodies in which translational and rotational kinetic energy change together, such as a cylinder or sphere rolling without slipping down an incline
