Learning objectives
(HL) Define magnetic flux as Φ = BA cosθ and flux linkage as NΦ, and calculate the change in flux when a coil is moved into or rotated within a magnetic field
(HL) State Faraday's law ε = −N ΔΦ/Δt and use it to calculate the magnitude of an induced emf from the rate of change of flux linkage
(HL) Apply Lenz's law to determine the direction of an induced current, and explain the law as a consequence of the conservation of energy
(HL) Calculate the emf induced across a straight conductor of length L moving with speed v perpendicular to a uniform field from ε = BvL, and explain its origin in terms of the magnetic force on the charge carriers in the conductor
(HL) Explain how a coil rotating at constant angular speed in a uniform magnetic field generates a sinusoidal emf, and relate the peak emf to the number of turns, the coil area, the flux density and the angular speed
(HL) Interpret graphs of flux linkage and induced emf against time, recognising that the induced emf is the negative gradient of the flux linkage graph
