Learning objectives

Distinguish the data definition language of SQL (CREATE, ALTER, DROP) from its data manipulation language (SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE)

Construct queries over one table or two joined tables using SELECT, DISTINCT, FROM, WHERE, BETWEEN, LIKE with the % wildcard, AND, OR, NOT, ORDER BY with ASC or DESC, GROUP BY and HAVING, and predict the rows a query returns

Construct INSERT INTO, UPDATE ... SET and DELETE statements that change stored data, and explain why frequent changes to indexed columns cost performance

(HL) Construct calculations with the aggregate functions AVG, COUNT, MAX, MIN and SUM, applied to grouped data to produce reports that support decisions

(HL) Describe virtual views and materialized (snapshot) views, and explain how views hide complexity, restrict what users can see, keep results consistent and speed up frequent queries

(HL) Describe how transactions protect integrity through atomicity, consistency, isolation and durability, using BEGIN TRANSACTION, COMMIT and ROLLBACK
