Learning objectives

Evaluate object-oriented programming as a way of modelling real-world entities as classes and objects, weighing modularity and reuse against extra complexity and run-time overhead

Construct UML class diagrams that list attributes and methods with their visibility, and use them to design classes that meet a set of requirements

Distinguish static class variables and methods from instance variables and methods, and justify when a value should belong to the class rather than to each object

Construct a class with attributes, constructors and methods, instantiate objects from it and call their methods

Explain encapsulation and information hiding, and apply private attributes with public accessor and mutator methods to protect the state of an object
