Learning objectives
Identify the explanatory variable and the response variable for two quantitative variables, and construct a scatterplot with the explanatory variable on the horizontal axis
Describe a scatterplot in context by its direction, form, strength and unusual features, such as clusters or points that fall outside the overall pattern
Interpret the correlation coefficient r as a measure of the direction and strength of a linear relationship, taking values from −1 to 1, and match a value of r to a scatterplot
Explain that r has no units, is unchanged when either variable is rescaled or when the two variables are exchanged, and measures only linear association, so that a strong curved relationship can have r close to 0
Determine r with technology or read it from computer output, and explain why a correlation, however strong, does not show that changes in one variable cause changes in the other
