Learning objectives
Explain the three rows of the free-response rubric — thesis, evidence and commentary, and sophistication — and the number of points each row carries
Self-assess a practice essay row by row, deciding what evidence in your own writing earns or fails to earn each point
Diagnose the most common reason responses lose the evidence and commentary points, which is evidence presented without explanation of how it supports the claim
Explain why the sophistication point is awarded for the response as a whole and identify what specifically in a sample essay earns it
Divide the two hours and fifteen minutes of Section II across the three essays deliberately, including the reading period, and practice writing to that plan
Revise a scored practice essay by rewriting the weakest body paragraph rather than the whole response, so that improvement targets the row that lost points
