Learning objectives
Read the introductory note for the writer, audience, occasion and date before reading the passage, and use it to establish the rhetorical situation
Write a thesis that identifies the writer's purpose and the overall strategy used to achieve it, so that the essay has an argument to prove
Organize the essay around the writer's choices or the movement of the passage rather than marching through devices one paragraph at a time
Explain in every body paragraph how a named choice works on the intended audience and advances the writer's purpose
Quote briefly and often, keeping the analysis of the quotation longer than the quotation itself
Avoid summarizing the passage, and check each paragraph against the question of whether it explains why the writer made that choice
Continue with a revision plan
