Learning objectives

Describe a sinusoidal alternating current or voltage by its period, frequency and peak value, and represent it with x = x₀ sin ωt.

Explain the r.m.s. (rms) value as the steady direct value that gives the same power, use Irms = I₀/√2 and Vrms = V₀/√2, and show that the mean power in a resistor is half the peak power.

Sketch the output of half-wave and full-wave rectification, and explain how one diode, or four diodes in a bridge, turn an alternating supply into a one-way current.

Explain how a capacitor across the load smooths a rectified output, and predict how a larger capacitance or load resistance (a longer time constant RC) reduces the ripple.
