Learning objectives

Recall the interconversions between alkanes, alkenes, halogenoalkanes, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, nitriles and amines as a reaction map

Identify the functional groups in a molecule that contains several of them and predict its properties and its reactions with AS reagents

Devise two- and three-step synthetic routes between AS compound classes, stating reagents and conditions for each step, including lengthening the carbon chain through a nitrile or hydroxynitrile

Evaluate a proposed synthetic route by classifying each step (e.g. nucleophilic substitution, oxidation), checking its reagents and conditions, and suggesting by-products or side reactions
