Learning objectives
Explain gas pressure as the result of molecules colliding with the container walls, state the ideal-gas assumptions (no intermolecular forces, negligible molecular volume) and use them to explain why real gases deviate at high pressure and low temperature
Use pV = nRT in SI units (p in Pa, V in m³, T in K, R = 8.31 J K⁻¹ mol⁻¹) to calculate p, V, n or T and to determine the relative molecular mass of a gas or volatile liquid
Describe the lattice structures of giant ionic (NaCl, MgO), simple molecular (iodine, buckminsterfullerene C₆₀, ice), giant molecular (SiO₂, graphite, diamond) and giant metallic (copper) solids
Explain and predict melting point, boiling point, electrical conductivity and solubility from structure and bonding, and deduce the structure of an unknown substance from its properties
