Learning objectives

Deduce the number of different carbon environments from a ¹³C NMR spectrum, assign them using chemical shift data, and predict the number of peaks for a given structure

Interpret proton NMR spectra using chemical shift (δ in ppm), relative peak areas and n + 1 splitting patterns to identify proton environments and the number of hydrogens on neighbouring carbons

Predict the chemical shifts and splitting patterns of the proton environments in a given molecule

Explain the use of tetramethylsilane (TMS) as the δ = 0 reference and of deuterated solvents such as CDCl₃, and identify O–H and N–H protons by exchange with D₂O

Deduce possible structures for an unknown compound from its NMR spectra together with other data such as its molecular formula or infrared spectrum
